Introduction to Houston machine shop

A Houston machine shop essentially consists of various machines needed for wide ranging machining operation like cutting, fabrication and finishing of metals to get the end product. The equipment available in machine shops is used not only for repairing of exiting components but also for producing new components, which may be used as prototypes. Personnel working in machine shops are trained to handle the machines installed therein and expected to sense the role that a finished part would play in the operation of the machine needing it.
Companies manufacturing items like cars, big engines, aircrafts and many types of machine tools often have machine shops within their premises for making and/or repairing different parts. Manufacturing companies need machine shops for creating new, traditional or test components. Certain educational or research institutions too have machine shops to enable people understand machining of components needing repairs or engineering components for specific applications such as fabrication of apparatus for conducting experiments.

Some of the most frequently found machines in a machine shop are drills, presses and lathes. It should also have files, rasps and suitably designed booths for painting or metallic coating needed for giving a finishing touch to products. The place needs to be adequately ventilated to prevent particulates.  At times, using robots may be necessary when making of parts necessarily requires clean environment for avoiding contamination of any kind. The controls for robots are provided outside the room, containing robot which is employed for machining the component as per given specifications.

It is customary for any Houston machine shop to have safety standards. Before workers are allowed to use machines, they are trained to use the same and made to wear safety devices like face coverings and goggles. Workers are trained to remain alert to risks of working in workshops. For periodic inspection of machines and enhancing safety measures in the machine shop, safety officers may be appointed.

High schools offering repair and vehicle maintenance programs also have machine shops, enabling students to get familiar with the use of various tools and machines, which they would generally use after finishing studies. Schools imparting technical education to students would generally be equipped with first class machine shops and thus allow students to learn skilled trades and help them getting internships and jobs after they have completed their studies.

Basic Tools

Any machine shop would necessarily require measuring tools, drafting machines and planning arrangements. Some of the most basic hand tools for machine shops include different kinds of drills and drivers, sockets and hammers, cutting saws and fasteners, basic grinding and reaming tools, tap and die sets and torches, reamers and files for lapping and broaching.

Lathes

Lathes come in varying sizes for doing a variety of industrial jobs. You need lathes for making metallic parts needed for producing innumerable items like engines, telescopes, microscopes, and different kinds of vehicles, fire arms, trains and many more. Lathe machines are used for working on metals like iron, steel, aluminum, brass and others. For quite some time now C NC (Computer Numerically Controlled) lathe machines have been available in the market. CNC machines are used for producing complicated components, needing high degree of accuracy.

Welding machines

Welding is the most usual way of joining together two pieces of metals. A good Houston machine shop has different kinds of welding machines including arc, TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) and MIG (Metal Inert Gas. Arc welding involves producing an electric arc that produces enough heat to join two pieces of metal, using a consumable electrode. Different kinds of electrodes are available for joining of different metals.
